Patricia Banner´s theory about Professional growth

Patricia Benner’s theory, often called “From Novice to Expert,” explains how professionals develop their skills and knowledge over time. She identified five stages of growth:

  1. Novice – Beginners who follow rules and instructions strictly, with little experience.

  2. Advanced Beginner – Gaining experience, starting to recognize patterns, but still needing guidance.

  3. Competent – Can plan and make decisions independently, understands long-term goals, and prioritizes tasks.

  4. Proficient – Sees the big picture, anticipates problems, and can handle situations efficiently.

  5. Expert – Highly skilled and intuitive, able to manage complex situations creatively and confidently.

Benner emphasizes that growth requires experience, reflection, continuous learning, and patience. Professionals move through these stages as they practice, learn from mistakes, and apply knowledge in real situations.
